Jefferson Airplane - Today

Features on their famous 'Surrealistic Pillow' album, this showcases a different side to Jefferson Airplane. Perfectly builds to the crescendo, with great vocals, and poignant lyrics.

Great song, great artist! From the album of the same name, features Danny Thompson of 'Pentangle' on bass, there are also many great live versions of this out there.

Eddie Hazel - California Dreamin'

Eddie Hazel was a guitarist in 'Funkadelic'. This cover comes from an album called 'Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs', a criminally overlooked guitarist, his most notable track is 'Maggot Brain', an emotive instrumental piece. Contributions on this track come from other members of the P-Funk collective.

Cat Power - Ramblin' Woman

God knows how Cat Power turned this old country song, by Hank Williams, into this brooding, blues groove. Aided by The Delta Blues Band, the slow, pondering tempo compliments the downbeat lyrics. Features on Cat Powers' 'Jukebox' album.

Kings Of Convenience - Once Around The Block

A folk-pop duo from Norway, consisting of Erlend Øye (Whitest Boy Alive) and Eirik Glambek Bøe. This is a cover of the Badly Drawn Boy song of the same name. A different tempo and fel to the original, that fully compliments the lyrics. A lovely, twinkling piano outro to boot.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band - Driftin' Blues (Monterey 1967)

Taken from the Monterrey Festival, brilliant piece of big band blues. Nice dynamics, allowing space for each other to play and build it up. This was post Mike Bloomfield, but I think he's in there somewhere applauding.

Cass Elliot & The Lovin Spoonful - Didn't Want To Have To Do It

Not too sure about the origins of this collaboration, but it all comes together well in the end. The Lovin' Spoonful seem to get ignored on the radio these days, apart from 'Summer in The City', but a quick stroll through the best of showcases some excellent song writing. Worth a look.

Fleetwood Mac - Dragonfly

This was Fleetwood Mac's first release after the departure of Peter Green. A, for the want of a better word, 'psychedelic' opus, possibly relating to the departure of Peter Green. The lyrics are taken from a poem by Welsh poet W. H. Davies, also called 'Dragonfly'. Lead guitarist Danny Kirwan played alongside Green previously, here he is complimented by the subtle rhythm guitar of Bob Welch, and the trundling rhythm section of Fleetwood and McVie, of the orignal line up. For those who are interested, other poems by W.H. Davies can be found here http://www.theglade.net/whdavies/whdavies.html.

Bill Ryder Jones - Someone That You Know

Bill Ryder Jones is a former guitarist in 'The Coral'. He left in 2008/9 to pursue his own music. This piece isn't on official release but was released on his myspace page. It's a very elegant, minimalist piece of music that I hope you enjoy. You can find more of Bill's music on his myspace page.
